Creating a Stone & Crystal Apothecary

Crystals and gemstones are known for their magical healing properties. For centuries, they have been used in healing modalities and rituals to balance the mind, body, and spirit energetically. Here, you'll learn how to create a crystal apothecary, but first, a little history.

Ancient Aztec, Chinese, and Egyptian civilizations incorporated crystals, gemstones, and rocks into personal care products, statues, sarcophagi, and talismans to prevent and release mental, physical, and spiritual blockages.

Stones and crystals are listed in the bible. In the Hebrew Bible, the Tanakh, different stones are listed for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. Agate, beryl, carnelian, chrysolite, crystal, emerald, amethyst, jacinth, jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise, and sapphire. Also mentioned are diamond, ruby, topaz, garnet, and onyx. Israelite priests were to keep two crystals in their pockets meant to protect them, called thummim (protection) and urim (light). Priests used the stones to determine God's will for the people. Breastplates held precious stones. The breastplate of Aaron contained these gems arranged in four rows of three (Exodus 28:15-21). Crystals are also mentioned in the books of Revelation and Isaiah.

Everything in the universe has an energetic vibration, including stones. Due to the millions of years it took each stone to form, each crystal and gemstone contains a unique frequency and blueprint to which the human electromagnetic energy field can align. When a crystal or gemstone is placed on or near the human body, energy is transferred to an individual's aura, promoting better energy flow.

The difference between a crystal and a gemstone is that a crystal is a solid substance with atoms, ions, and molecules arranged in a regular geometric pattern (natural geometric shapes) in the three spatial dimensions. Examples of crystals are amethyst, citrine, and rose quartz. Even salt, sugar, and snowflakes are crystals. On the other hand, gemstones are rare minerals cut, faceted, and polished for jewelry making and are usually very high priced. Gemstones must be classified as rare, beautiful, and durable to fit the description of a precious gem, such as diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires, which are crystalline minerals. Semi-precious gemstones, such as amber, coral, jet, pearl, and turquoise, are derived from organic compounds or rock, such as lapis lazuli. Stones (plain rocks) have no uniform structure. They are composites of one or more different minerals.

People seek to use four types of stones in healing practices: raw crystals, clusters (and geodes), points and wands, slices, and tumbled stones. Rough or raw crystals are chunks of rock left in their natural state. When used in this state, they are easier to connect emotionally to and have a more subtle effect in rooms and spaces than a cluster or geode. Clusters and geodes are naturally hollowed-out formations containing crystals with powerful frequencies that can efficiently purify a room and lend toward a relaxed atmosphere. Points and wands are shaped to point and are used as healing tools for transmitting energy. These stones are widely available in metaphysical shops as jewelry pendants to dangle about the neck on ropes and chains or worn as earrings. Stone slices are also worn as jewelry. However, larger points, wands, and slices are available for placing on alters and sitting in rooms. Last but not least, tumbled stones are smaller original pieces of rocks and minerals placed in a rock tumbler machine until their edges are smooth and polished to bring out their beauty.

People are often drawn to particular crystals, gemstones, and rocks without knowing why, which is fine when your intentions are of no importance and stones are chosen only for their beauty. However, getting to know your gems better is essential when your aim is set for an intended response. It is believed that when stones are used for specific personal intentions, they can cause significant transformation. For example, when a crystal, such as Black Tourmaline (my favorite), is used for protection and matched to prevent an abusive ex-lover from causing any more harm, the stone's power is magnified.

Purchasing or making a small pouch and stringing it so you can wear it around your neck or waist will hold the stone's energies close. Some people suggest that stones worn as pendants should be placed on chains or ropes long enough for the stone to lie across the heart area while standing.

Choosing crystals, gems, and stones doesn't need to be a daunting task. Owning just five to ten can complete your stone and crystal apothecary.

Stones & Crystals for Balancing the Chakras

Adding gemstones to healing rituals helps create a better flow of energy and balance in the chakras. For complete aura protection, wear an Apache tear obsidian.

  • Crown Chakra - White/Gold/Violet - Amethyst, clear quartz, onyx, cactus quartz, chevron, diamond, moldavite, snow quartz, and opal

  • Forehead or Third Eye Chakra - Indigo/Dark Blue - Sodalite, amethyst, sugilite, sapphire, lapis lazuli, diamonds, jet, jade, falcon's eye, and rainbow fluorite

  • Throat Chakra - Blue/Turquoise - Aquamarine, blue opal, chrysocolla, lapis lazuli, chalcedony, celestite, blue tourmaline, turquoise, nephrite, and blue topaz

  • Heart Chakra - Rose/Green/Emerald - Green calcite, emerald, jade, rose quartz, malachite, aventurine, Chrysoprase, ruby, moss agate, olivine, pink rhodonite, rose quartz, green/pink tourmaline, pink coral, and rhodochrosite

Reiki Stones

In Reiki, the objective is often to balance and energize the chakras. However, it isn't always enough to match the color of a stone with a corresponding chakra color. Specific yellow-colored crystals may be better blueprinted for relieving solar plexus (stomach and control) issues than others.

Reiki practitioners often use the amethyst or auartz (crown chakra), blue aventurine or lapis lazuli (third-eye chakra), sodalite or chrysocolla (throat chakra), green aventurine, jade or rose quartz (heart chakra), yellow aventurine or citrine (solar plexus), peach aventurine or dragon's blood (sacral chakra) and red jasper or obsidian (root chakra).

Stones & Crystals to Match Intention

Specific crystals, gemstones, and rocks commonly used to match intention are as follows.

  • Clear quartz (energy and clarity)
  • Rose quartz (anxiety, love, and romance)
  • Hematite (grounding)
  • Selenite (prevention of nightmares)
  • Tiger eye (protection)
  • Holed rocks protect the home from bad weather and thieves.

NOTE: To be clear, I'm not suggesting that stones and crystals can heal you. For example, fluorite is known to fight viruses. However, you should never solely rely on the energetics of a stone or crystal for healing. Stones and crystals should be used only as complementary measures.
